Technician Certification For EPA Compliance
What Is the EPA Technician Certification?
Under EPA regulations, technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants into the atmosphere must be certified. To earn the Section 608 Technician Certification, technicians should pass a qualification test.
Why Is It Important?
It provides clients with the visibility to a provider's certification level so that clients can make an informed choice when dispatching a provider. Clients can ensure compliance by validating technicians are properly certified when they handle refrigerant during a maintenance, repair, or retrofit service.
What Are the Types of EPA Technician Certification?
There are four types (levels) of certification:
- Type I: For servicing small appliances containing 5 lbs or less of refrigerant
- Type II: For servicing or disposing of high- or very high-pressure appliances, except small appliances
- Type III: For servicing or disposing of low-pressure appliances
- Universal: For servicing all types of equipment
Providers whose technicians service HVAC and refrigerated assets can upload their technician’s EPA certification to Provider Automation. This feature provides administrators and business owners with a tool to manage their technicians’ certification.
Note that the same technician may have several certifications of different levels.
How Can I Upload the Certificates to ServiceChannel?
- Navigate to your Profile.
- Click the pencil icon in the upper-right corner of the profile to edit it.
- Switch to the Licenses section.
- Next to Trade Certifications and Licenses, click the Add button.
- Select the Certification radio button. Additional fields will appear.
- Fill out the required * fields:
- * Pick the Trade — it should be either Refrigeration or HVAC.
* Select the technician’s Name.
If you have subcontractors, you can pick your subcontractor’s technicians from that list as well.
* Enter the technician’s Certificate Number.
* Select the Level — type of EPA Technician Certification.
Applicable to US-based providers only.
- * Pick the Date when the certificate was issued.
- (Optional) Set the Expiration Date for the certificate.
- (Optional) Enter any additional information you think may be relevant for your client in the Description field.
* Drag and drop the required document, or browse your computer to upload the certificate.
The maximum file size is 1MB.
- Click Save to complete the process.
- Repeat steps 4–7 to add EPA certificates for other technicians or to the same technician if this technician has more than one type of certification.
The technicians’ certification gets added to your Fixxbook profile and can also be viewed by your clients.
Only certified technicians will be able to capture refrigerant usage on work orders in the SC Provider mobile app. Those who don't have the certification will get the following error message when trying to record refrigerant usage.
Whenever required, you can go back and update certificate information.
